The Colonist Report, a global media organization, has launched JournoTech, a new initiative designed to provide accessible media and tech training to marginalized communities, minorities, and people of colour.
Based in the UK and Nigeria, JournoTech aims to meet the growing need for digital skills by equipping journalists, students, newsrooms, educators, and community leaders with the tools they need to thrive in the digital age. The programme also focuses on digital rights, promoting online safety and literacy for all.
On November 18, 2024, the program kicked off a three-day training for 15 journalists, including editors, reporters, and freelancers from seven countries: Burkina Faso, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Nepal, Nigeria, and the UK.
The three days training will cover a wide range of topics, including how to use AI tools, prompt engineering, understanding AI technology, data protection, and security. Participants will also learn how to use AI for fact-checking, detecting AI-generated content, and addressing ethical considerations and biases in AI.
“Our goal is to create equitable opportunities in the digital age,” said Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi, founder of The Colonist Report. “JournoTech is more than just training; it’s a platform for empowerment and transformation.”
JournoTech focuses on bridging the digital skills gap, providing resources to underrepresented groups, raising awareness about digital rights, and creating inclusive learning environments. To ensure no one is left behind, the initiative also supports participants with internet subscriptions to overcome financial barriers to learning.
With hands-on workshops, mentorship, and access to practical resources, JournoTech aims to empower individuals with the skills they need to succeed in the digital economy. This initiative is part of The Colonist Report UK and Africa’s mission to promote global equity and inclusion through media and technology.
