Elfredah Kevin-Alerechi, managing editor of the Colonist Report Africa, has been chosen to attend the JournalismAI Academy for small newsrooms in sub-Shaharan Africa in early September 2024, organised by Polis, the journalism think-tank at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The Colonist Report Africa was one of 20 newsrooms selected from 13 different countries from over 282 applicants in Sub-Saharan Africa.
According to Polis, the programme “is our very first Sub-Saharan Africa Academy for Small Newsrooms programme, supported by the Google News Initiative.”
Kevin-Alerechi, the founder and managing editor of The Colonist Report Africa, said her participation in the JournalismAI Academy “would open another opportunity for the team at The Colonist Report Africa to expand our knowledge on how to ethically use AI in our investigative reports.”
Kevin-Alerechi said: “As a growing investigative media organisation, our acceptance into the JournalismAI Academy serves as another reminder of the critical work we do to hold governments and multinational corporations accountable for their actions.”
Selected newsrooms participants from Nigeria are Olubusola Aro, a reporter for The Cable Newspaper, and Lateef Sanni, the communications officer at DUBAWA.
Others include Billy Ntaote, Director and Investigative Journalist at the MNN Centre for Investigative Journalism in Lesotho, Felista Wangari, Editor at the Africa Women Journalism Project in Kenya, Anita Nkirote, Digital Lead at Hortinews in Zimbabwe, and many more.
Here’s the full list of selected participants.
