While these companies make millions of dollars <a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/business-services\/shell-declares-20-1b-profit\/#:~:text=By%20Guardian%20Nigeria&amp;text=Royal%20Dutch%20Shell%20has%20declared,Downstream%20Petroleum%20Regulatory%20Authority...\">annually<\/a> from their fossil fuel exploration, the people of the Niger Delta continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/23793448.north-sea-giant-linked-destructive-oil-spill\/\">suffer<\/a> environmental degradation, which affects their entire livelihood and ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of these affected people in remote areas do not have a voice to ask the right questions. The few lone voices that know how to fight, have perhaps been put in a cage with a clipped wing and bruised sore throat and only a few communities, with the help of environmental organizations such as the Health of Mother Earth <a href=\"https:\/\/homef.org\/\">Foundation<\/a> (HOMEF), educate the people on their rights, for which they then demand justice. Unfortunately, many of these hearings suffer snail speed as they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/latest-news\/uk-high-court-to-hold-multi-day-hearing-on-shells-legal-liability-over-niger-delta-pollution\/\">dragged<\/a> and linger on in court for years before justice prevails, and others have resulted in adverse <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/environment\/2013\/jan\/30\/shell-acquitted-nigeria-pollution-charges\">outcomes<\/a> for the affected parties.<\/p>\n<p>The wound from the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/newswirengr.com\/2023\/03\/21\/how-totalenergies-oil-pollution-forced-host-communities-to-engage-in-illegal-crude-oil-mining\/\">fossil fuel <\/a>still hurts both community residents and the <a href=\"https:\/\/newswirengr.com\/2023\/03\/21\/how-totalenergies-oil-pollution-forced-host-communities-to-engage-in-illegal-crude-oil-mining\/\">environment<\/a>, causing climate crises, which prompted\u00a0 HOMEF to hold a two-day school of ecology (SoE) to educate, enlighten, and inform residents in affected communities on how to heal from the impact of fossil fuel addiction.<\/p>\n<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thecolonistreport.com\/Africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SoE.jpg?resize=1110%2C755&#038;ssl=1\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thecolonistreport.com\/Africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SoE.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thecolonistreport.com\/Africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SoE.jpg?resize=300%2C204&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thecolonistreport.com\/Africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SoE.jpg?resize=1024%2C697&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thecolonistreport.com\/Africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/SoE.jpg?resize=768%2C523&amp;ssl=1 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1110\" height=\"755\" \/><figcaption>Photo shows Nnimimo Bassey during his lecture at the School of Ecology in Akwa-Ibom State\/HOMEF on March 20 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nnimimo Bassey, the founder of HOMEF, stated during his teaching at the SOE that no oil spill is minor. The majority of oil pipelines, according to him, only last 10 to 15 years, but some in the Niger Delta have been in place for longer and have not been altered. Attendants\u00a0 include some affected community members who shared their experiences about the sufferings of the communities hosting fossil fuel companies.<\/p>\n<p>One community leader, Chief Eniya Wilson, the secretary of chiefs in Okoroutip community in Ibono Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, said his community is known for fishing and residents depend on the sales from their catch to make ends meet but constant oil pollution has made fish go extinct.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson remembered that following the\u00a0 constant oil spills, community residents had thought of holding a peaceful protest, dragging attention to their plight, but then decided not to continue to avoid being attacked by security personnel attached to the fossil fuel companies operating in their companies. \u201cWe can\u2019t get good harvest from our crops, our drinking water are filled with water, and whenever we dig the ground to plant, we see crude oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Editing by Kevin Woke and Elfredah
